When you really don’t want your little sister in the photo JUST ONE TIME

Yesterday a beautiful Kingfisher flew into the side of the house, and despite being put in a sheltered spot while having positive affirmations whispered to it in little girl voices, and then being sung an original song composed just for the stunned-bird occasion, the bird didn’t make it. A coffin was fashioned out of a cardboard tube and paper towels, and then Tilly asserted: “I’m the Environment Monitor for my class, so Dad you HAVE to take the tape off the top of the coffin before we bury it because the plastic won’t break down and because I’ve got the Environment Monitor badge you’ve got to do what I say” (enviro-monitor status often goes to her head - but yes, she was right). Then a hole was dug and we all had to say nice things about the bird. I got a tiny bit teary, not so much about the bird (sad as that was), but about the sweetness of tiny people who have an innate sense of needing to mark loss with respect and kindness. Then they had a screaming fit at each other on the beach about who would get the cracked bucket and who would get the non-cracked bucket while I whispered “oh for fuck’s sake” under my breath, so we were back to normal.
